ENCOURAGED by the phenomenal success of the first summit, the Supply Chain and Logistics Group (SCLG) will conduct in Dubai this May the second annual summit on logistics and the second industry networking in Dubai.
SCLG officials said the summit will focus on various issues involved in the supply-chain management (SCM), including policy and infrastructure, transportation and technology, warehousing and logistics.
Working under the banner of the Dubai Chamber and Commerce and Industry, SCLG said the Second Logistics & SCM Strategy Summit and the Second Industry Networking Gala Dinner will be held in a Dubai hotel on May 6-7, with more than 200 delegates.
Officials of SCLG, a non-profit organisation, said the events will help promote Dubai as an international centre for the supply-chain and logistics industry, and bring into play the competitive edge of the emirate in the region.
With the theme “Strategies for business excellence through an effective supply chain”, the SCM Summit will have speakers offering regional and global perspectives to the attendees.
The event will have 18 presentations in six tracks, namely Policy and Infrastructure, Transportation, Technology and Best Practices, Warehousing, Purchasing and Retail Logistics. Each track will have a panel discussion, headed by a moderator, after the presentations. The moderator will talk to six industry experts and engage them in an inter-active discussion on the different issues facing the industry.
Industry professionals, such as David W Fairnie, director of security at DP World; Michael Proffitt, the well-known logistics veteran with 30 years of experience; Omar Hijazi, CEO of Tejari and many senior managers in the Middle East will also be sharing their views during the event.
SCLG’s Dr Cedwyn Fernandes, also of the University of Middlesex, will make a presentation on the various policies needed to support the development of a world-class logistics hub in the UAE. This falls under the Policy & Infrastructure category, which will also tackle the supply-chain developments in China.
For the Technology & Best Practices category, under Track 3, the presenters will focus on the importance of taking advantage of the latest technology in creating an environmentally sustainable supply chain.
The presenters in Track 2, which covers the Transportation category, include Steffen Th Steensbaek, SCM manager at Maersk Logistics Middle East; Dr Dermot Carey, a management consultant based in Ireland; UK-based Professor Iain Reid, of the University of Liverpool; Andrew Saliba, managing director of Malta-based Logic; Tamer Farouk, senior manager for the Middle East at Oracle, and Hijazi.
The SCLG has unveiled sponsorship options for the events, including for the gala dinner at $16,500, platinum at $12,500, gold at $8,500, silver at $5,500, networking lunch at $5,000 and gift at $5,500. All sponsorships come with passes for the delegates, web banner ads at the SCLG’s LINK magazine and SCLG/DVV Yearbook cum directory and other privileges.
The SCM Summit will be followed by a gala networking Dinner with a lot of entertainment, which will be the highlight of the evening.
The second day of the event will focus on two workshops – Profit and Growth through SCM, to be conducted by Dr Carey, and the Leaner Processes – Practical Applications for Cost Savings Initiatives in Supply-Chain Activities, to be handled by Saliba.
Last year’s events had 12 speakers, 36 panelists, six moderators and six track leaders – who all discussed the different strategies for a successful logistics and SCM programme. There were speakers and delegates from Ireland, Singapore, Amsterdam, the US, the UK, Malta, Bahrain, Qatar, Saudi Arabia and India.
Pall Hermannsson, director of supply chain at Al Ghanim Industry, in Kuwait, said he had not expected so much of last year’s conference on industry networking. “But I am now very glad that I came. This is the only conference which has delivered what it promised,” he said. “I will be looking forward to the next one.”
